Polyaspartic is a fast-curing, industrial-strength resin system from the polyurea family, widely used as a topcoat over epoxy. Here's the honest, fact-backed case for why your concrete floor starts with epoxy — and why a polyaspartic-only floor is a gamble.
Polyaspartic is a fast-curing, industrial-strength resin from the polyurea family — and it was engineered to do one job: act as a thin, clear topcoat. It is not spec'd for direct-to-concrete application, and no quality installer applies it to bare concrete.
Here's why: a polyaspartic cures in minutes and can only be applied in a wafer-thin film. Your concrete is a porous slab that constantly pushes moisture vapor upward. Under that pressure, a thin polyaspartic base layer degrades — it delaminates and peels. That's the single most common failure in "one-day" polyaspartic floors, and it's exactly why those installers write moisture-related exclusions into their warranties.
Epoxy is different. It's a high-build coating — applied thick, bonding deep into the slab — and it's what professional coating systems use as the base layer in direct contact with concrete.
Epoxy cures through an exothermic reaction — the thicker it's applied, the faster and stronger it cures. That's why epoxies are called "high-build" coatings: they go down in thick, armor-like layers that a thin-curing resin simply can't match.
That thickness is what stands up to hydrostatic pressure pushing moisture through the slab. A thick epoxy primer forms a barrier against moisture vapor transmission and anchors itself deep into the concrete — which is why architects and professional installers spec epoxy for direct-to-concrete work, and why epoxy-based systems come with real, full-coverage warranties.
The "one-day polyaspartic" floor is built from three thin layers: a wafer-thin polyaspartic primer, a broadcast of flakes, and a thin clear topcoat. It requires less product and less labor — which is why it's popular with installers, even though peeling and staining are the number-one reasons coating systems fail.
Read the fine print on those 15- to 20-year guarantees: nearly all of them exclude moisture-related issues — the exact condition that makes thin polyaspartic films peel. When the coating lifts, that warranty isn't worth the paper it's printed on.
